RE-USE VISAFSLAG

On the northern harborpart the fish industry disappears. On the northern harborpart a great living area will emerge with lots of green.
In the situation you see the Visafslag building with on the North side an autofree green area with among other things sport supplies. On the south side you find the water of the first port. The Visafslag building can be reached from the street, the raised square and from the duin between the building which is situated against the duin. From the duin you are able to see the water, because a number of parts of the Visafslag building have been made transparent and one part entirely open.

The Visafslag building can be devided into a cultural centre in the head, winter gardens in the transparent parts, houses in the largest part of the tail and a child nursery at the end of the tail. The houses in the building are connected by means of an innerstreet and the winter gardens which are semi-public. Because the building has ‘sheddaken’, some houses have two layers and other three layers. The houses on the North side have been orientated on the green autofree area and have a serre as outside space, whereas the houses on the south side are orientated

on the water and have their own space on the quay as outside space.

The entrance of the cultural centre in the head is situated on ground floor on the North side. You enter in the foyer and to have enough light the floor of the second layer has been taken away. Furthermore the head has been designed in a way to easily reach exhibition spaces, exhibition halls, an auditorium and a restaurant from the foyer. On the groundfloor next to the square a bar has been placed.

Besides taking away the floor on the second layer also a number of large interventions have been done in the facade. On the groundfloor a lot of glass has been applied to make it open to the square and to get a little light in the low exhibition hall. Also a clear entrance has been made. Furthermore a lot of materials have been preserved. We decided to use the current construction as much as possible. And to create openings by removing concrete elements, both in the facade and the roof. In the facades of the tail we have chosen to remove concrete prefab elements and to replace them with windows. On the groundfloor we have applied much more glass.
