Gerardusplein
Increasing the quality of life through transformation
The housing market is stuck; there is a shortage of social rental housing, especially for young people. Within this context, a church building is empty in the Brabant village of Gemert for which a new use is being sought. Housing corporation Goed Wonen Gemert saw an opportunity to make a substantial contribution to the local community with the redevelopment of the Sint Gerarduskerk.
Goed Wonen wanted to develop a vision of the area around the location and involve surrounding inhabitants, because of the history and added value of the place. In addition, Goed Wonen wanted to know the opportunities and possibilities for the building in relation to its historical role and function as a meeting place in the neighborhood.De Plekkenmakers developed a new housing concept and investigated whether, and if so, what needs there are in the village to share facilities.
